The Origins of Nutella® and Its Perfect Pairing with Our Scrolls

Did you know that the world consumes about 610 tons of Nutella® every single day?? This is roughly the equivalent of the weight of Auckland Sky Tower eaten of Nutella® in a just a month! But how did this beloved spread come to be, and why does it pair so perfectly with our warm cinnamon scrolls?


The idea of combining hazelnuts with chocolate dates back to the Napoleonic Wars when cocoa was scarce in Europe. Local chocolatiers in Turin, Italy, ingeniously mixed locally grown hazelnuts with their limited cocoa supplies to stretch their production. This creative solution turned into a local favourite. After World War II, faced with a similar scarcity of cocoa, Pietro Ferrero revived this idea and created Supercrema, the first cocoa-hazelnut spread. In 1964, his son Michele Ferrero rebranded it as Nutella® and began selling it in the iconic jars we still see in supermarkets today.


Nutella® quickly became a food icon. Its rich, creamy texture and irresistible taste made it a favourite around the world. Ferrero is now the buyer of about a third of the world’s hazelnut production! That’s a lot of hazelnuts, and they’re all going into making Nutella® the delicious treat it is.


Why we came up with the idea of pairing Nutella® with our scrolls? I think the real question is: why not? Our warm, fluffy dough, combined with the sweet, spicy notes of cinnamon, creates a comforting base that is elevated to a whole new level with a generous spread of Nutella®. When Nutella® meets the warm scroll, it melts slightly, creating a gooey layer that’s simply irresistible.


But we didn't stop there. We thought there was room for more: a sprinkle of chopped hazelnuts on top of the Nutella® to give each bite a satisfying crunch. This combination of textures – soft, warm dough, smooth Nutella®, and crunchy hazelnuts – makes our Nutella® Crunch scroll our second best-selling flavour, just behind the classic vanilla frosting.
