Well, here's the thing. We don't actually have any big secrets.
No magic ingredients, no ancient family recipes locked in a safe, and definitely no secret factory full of tiny cats making scrolls.
Just a few simple principles that we believe make a BIG difference:
1 - Great Ingredients. No Shortcuts.
We believe good food starts with good ingredients. Sounds obvious, right? But you'd be surprised how often that's forgotten.
We choose ingredients because we love how they taste, not because they're the cheapest option on a supplier's list.
We're talking Whittaker's chocolate, Anchor Cream Cheese (yep, NZ made, and way better than Philadelphia), Biscoff, delicious Barkers fruit compotes, and all those little things that make a treat taste like a proper treat.
Could we use cheaper alternatives? Absolutely. Could we make 150 different products that somehow all taste the same? Probably.
But if that's what you're after, there's a whole supermarket aisle waiting for you.
We'd rather make fewer things and make them really, really good.
2 - Made by Us. Not Just Sold by Us.
Our scrolls, cookies, brownies and other baked goodies don't arrive at Swirly in mysterious boxes from some giant factory (shocking fact: most brownies and muffin in almost any chain café have the same blend taste guess why? they are all purchased from the same wholesale ready to go or in a pre-mix engineered to be the cheapest)
We actually make them. From scratch.
Behind Swirly is our own kitchen, run with the same care and attention you'd put into baking something special at home. Just with bigger mixers, more trays, and a lot more flour everywhere.
We develop and test all our recipes, prepare our dough, make our fillings, bake our goodies and obsess over the little details ourselves.
And we like things simple. Our recipes are built around familiar baking ingredients you have at home: butter, flour, sugar, yeast, cocoa, cinnamon... Now check the ingredients from that famous donut shop chain and you will find a list of 30 chemicals and additives you never heard about.
Food should taste comfortable and familiar like home. Real baking, great ingredients, and nothing complicated.
3 - Local Wherever We Can.
Swirly is a small, family-owned business. Our commercial kitchen still sits on what used to be our home garage in Mt Wellington. When you buy at our shop we like to think that its Our family making good food for yours.
We started in a home kitchen, and even though we've grown a little since then, that feeling hasn't changed.
Whenever possible, we choose local suppliers, support other Kiwi businesses and use ingredients made right here in New Zealand.
Our Whittaker's chocolate? Kiwi. Our fruity compotes? Barkers, made in NZ. Our coffee? From the lovely team at Ozone...
Now, we're not going to pretend everything comes from around the corner. Some delicious things simply don't have a local alternative. (Seriously, has anyone found a Kiwi-made Biscoff yet?)
But when we have a choice, we love keeping things close to home. Supporting local isn't just a nice thing to say. It's something we genuinely believe in.
So, What's the Secret After All?
Maybe it's that there really isn't one.
Good ingredients. Made with care. A little love for local. And absolutely no interest in being just another factory bakery.
We are not trying to be the cheapest or make the most products.
