Cinnamon Scrolls: From Ancient Times to Modern Delights

Cinnamon scrolls, or rolls and buns in some places, are a sweet treat with a rich history. Let’s take a quick journey through time to see how this beloved pastry evolved.

Cinnamon’s story starts in medieval Europe, where it was a prized spice. Wealthy folks used it in all sorts of dishes, including early versions of spiced rolls. These were a real luxury, thanks to the high cost and exotic nature of cinnamon.

The modern cinnamon scroll, or "kanelbulle" in Sweden, likely started in Scandinavia. Swedes celebrate Cinnamon Bun Day every October 4th, showing just how much they love these treats. Scandinavian immigrants brought their cinnamon scrolls to America in the late 19th century, making them a staple in U.S. bakeries. In the U.S., they became bigger and sweeter, often topped with rich cream cheese frosting, and gained a special place in many hearts.

Today, cinnamon scrolls are a global favourite, known by different names and slight variations around the world. In the UK, they’re called Chelsea buns, and in Germany, they’re known as "schnecken." Despite these variations, the core of the cinnamon scroll – that sweet, spicy flavour – remains universally loved.

Lately, bakers have been getting creative, adding new fillings, toppings, and shapes to the classic scroll. At Swirly, we love experimenting with flavours like Caramel Pecan, Apple Crumble and Double Biscoff®. We like to think we mix tradition with a bit of innovation to bring you exciting new takes on this old favourite treat.

Making the perfect cinnamon scroll is a blend of art and science. It’s all about getting the dough just right, balancing the filling, baking it to perfection and finalise with the perfect topping.

Cinnamon scrolls have come a long way, but their sweet, spicy allure continues to captivate us. What about ordering some now?
